About Colonel Gilbert Potter
The Colonel Gilbert Potter Chapter, NSDAR was organized on October 10, 1957, in Amityville, Long Island, NY. The Chapter was named in honor of a Long Island Patriot of the American Revolution, Colonel Gilbert Potter. He was born in Huntington, NY in 1725. He was attached to the American Hospital Service as he was a physician by profession. During the French and Indian War, he served aboard a privateer as a surgeon. Later, in 1776, he was assigned to safeguard Long Island livestock from the enemy. During the occupation of Long Island he served in the underground system which kept General George Washington informed of the enemy's activities. Colonel Gilbert Potter died in 1786. He is buried in the Old Burying Hill Cemetery, Huntington, NY.
